SIP: Pregnancy

SPECIAL INTENTION FOR PRAYER

The SIP or Special Intention for Prayer. It is based off the Catholic concept of a Novena. A Novena is a prayer, or set of prayers, that are repeated for 9 days. You can get a much more detailed answer here in the Original Catholic EncyclopediaMine are only a week long and are based on whatever I feel God is leading me to pray for. We’ll see how this goes.

This week I want to pray for all those who are pregnant, are trying to get pregnant, are struggling with infertility, or with multiple miscarriages. The road can be a hard one. It is frustrating, heart wrenching, and can put a lot of stress on a marriage. You often blame yourself or your spouse or both. I also pray that the Spirit will guide those considering getting help that they will seek wise counsel on what procedures are ethical and honouring to God.

Here is my prayer:

Dear Lord,

Your first command to the first couple, Adam and Eve, is to be fruitful and multiply. I pray that you protect the child you created through the time of pregnancy. I pray for those couples who have suffered the loss of a child through miscarriage or those who are struggling with infertility. I pray that the professionals who they may consult will be compassionate above all else. I pray that the couple will seek wise and Godly counsel as to what procedures are honouring of you and respectful of life and your design for marriage and sex.

I pray this in your sons mighty name, Christ Jesus. Amen.

SIP: Caregivers

This week I want to pray for all those who are caregivers. In particular, I’m thinking of those who are taking care of loved one’s as they go through treatment. I can think of many, but as a for instance, a husband who who is taking care of his wife who is going through chemotherapy for breast cancer. This can put a strain on the married couple’s relationship but also children and extended family. Finances can also be an issue if there is no insurance. Pray for these folks as they navigate the rough seas of life.

Here is my prayer:

Dear Lord,

You came to earth, in the form of a man, to save us from suffering but also to experience what suffering is. Many of us have family members who are suffering through illness and treatment. Give the caregivers the compassion and patience they need to persevere. Give us the words of comfort to share, and the grace to give themselves when they say the wrong thing. Give them someone to support themselves, a shoulder to cry on and a group to reach out to for prayer.

I pray this in your sons mighty name, Christ Jesus. Amen.

As I announced here, I will be stepping down as Preaching Pastor of my church on Easter Sunday. SO, my prayer is for my wife and I  and my church.

Here is my prayer:

Dear Lord,

You gave me a wonderful ministry for the past year and it has been a joy and a challenge. As I move into the next place you desire for me, I pray that you will make that place visible and keep my anxiety low. I pray for my marriage, that is stay strong and united as we face any obstacles that may come up over this decision. I pray for the elders and parishioners of BLCF, that they discern proper next steps and my leaving will not be a stumbling block to continued attendance and that you will provide a way for them to continue to be fed through your Word and sacrament.

I pray this in your sons mighty name, Christ Jesus. Amen.

SIP: Victims of Modern Salvery

Mine are only a week long and are based on whatever I feel God is leading me to pray for. We’ll see how this goes.

This week’s SIP is for the victims of Human Trafficking. My interest has been piqued recently by the movie The Whistleblower.

Here are quick facts from the End it Movement:

  • Slavery occurs where one person exercises the ‘right’ of ownership over a person.2 (League of Nations)
  • They are held against their will often under the threat of violence. Physical, emotional and mental abuse is often part of their enslavement.3 (IJM)
  • Slavery still exists. It is estimated that there are anything between 10 million and 27 million slaves in the world today.4 (ILO and freetheslaves.net)
  • The reason for this broad range is that those people being counted are largely a ‘hidden’ population.5 (CNN Freedom Project)
  • It is estimated that human trafficking alone generates annual profits of around $32 billion.6 (ILO)
  • The majority of trafficking victims are between 18 and 24 years of age.7 (UN.GIFT)
  • In 1850, the cost of a slave (in today’s dollars) was $40,000, the avg. price of a slave today is $90.8 (Free the Slaves)
  • The victims most vulnerable are women and children. Children in particular are sold, bonded, trafficked, subjected to commercial sexual exploitation, recruited into armed conflicts and forced to work as domestic workers.9 (antislavery.org)
  • Several factors contribute to the persistence of slavery practices despite it being illegal in most countries, most significantly, poverty, the lack of enforcement of anti-slavery laws, and crime and corruption, including at the state level.10 (Free the Slaves)
  • Slavery has various forms today including human trafficking, forced labour, descent-based slavery, bonded labour and child labour.11 (antislavery.org)
  • Other less known forms of slavery include domestic servitude, forced marriage and those traded for the purpose of organ removal.12 (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime)

Here is my prayer:

Dear Lord,

You created each of us in your image. You created each of “fearfully and wonderfully”. You created us to be owned by you and no one else. There are those who treat your creation as property, who disregard your image in themselves and in others. People are traded. Children are held in bondage and forced to workout their debts by engaging in sexual behaviour. They are abused and tortured if they do not comply. Lord, I pray for their safety and for their rescue. I pray that your Spirit will move among governments and their peoples that they will not turn away from this horrific situation. For those who may die in bondage, I pray that the love of the Saviour would envelope them and bring them into your eternal love. I also pray for those engaged in the organization and functioning of these slavery rings. May they come to an understanding of what it means to be a human being and repent of their actions, accept responsibility and act in love towards their victims.

Break our hearts. Raise us up. Save these people.

I pray this in your sons mighty name, Christ Jesus. Amen.

SIP: Special Intention for Prayer: Marriage

praying_hands[1]I’m introducing a new weekly feature to the site, the SIP or Special Intention for Prayer. It is based off the Catholic concept of a Novena. This weeks SIP is for Marriages. Specifically, marriages that are facing difficulty because of affairs, difficulty with trust, money fights and money problems, or communication problems.

Here is my prayer:

Dear Lord,
You ordained marriage from the beginning to be a lifelong and life-giving union. You have it as your desire that what you have joined together, no one shall separate. Marriages are under attack from sexual sin and brokenness, lack of faithfulness, and difficulty with communication. Bring your Spirit upon these marriages and bring them into the oneness that you desire for them. Bring them the people and resources to speak into their lives and be with them as they struggle through the hurt and pain. Through your Spirit they can be healed. Give them open hearts and courage, courage, courage.
I pray this in your sons mighty name, Christ Jesus. Amen.
